Details of the Biski Lessons

At Wheelchair Ski Japan, we offer wheelchair ski lessons at Sun Meadows Kiyosato Ski Resort (Yamanashi Prefecture) from December (resort opening day) through the end of March.

Sun Meadows Kiyosato Ski Resort

This ski resort is known for its excellent access from Tokyo and its stunning scenery, with about 80% sunny days.

On clear days, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Mt. Fuji, the Southern Alps, and the Chichibu mountain range.

There are 8 courses in total, and while the resort is compact, the beginner’s course has a quad lift (4-person lift), making it safe and enjoyable even for first-time skiers.

Material

There are two main types of skiing equipment for wheelchair users:
・Mono Ski
・Biski

The Mono Ski has a single ski under the seat and is used in competitions such as the Paralympics.

The Biski has two skis under the seat and is generally ridden together with a coach.

90% of Wheelchair Ski Japan’s guests enjoy the Biski.

Because the Mono Ski is designed for independent skiing, it requires extensive training before one can ski alone. The Biski, however, allows you to ski from the very first day—riding to the summit, enjoying speed, and skiing safely together with a coach.

With seven belts securing the body, the Biski is also suitable for:

・People with quadriplegia
・People who cannot maintain a seated position

Three styles of Biski skiing

Bucketing

The coach skis together while steering the Biski from behind. The student leans right or left in response to the coach’s cues.

For thrill seekers: high speed like a roller coaster

For those who prefer: slow and relaxed skiing

Hand Outriggers + Tether

Students with grip strength can use short handheld skis (outriggers) to control direction.

The coach controls speed from behind with a tether, while the student handles left/right turns. This provides a sense of skiing independently.

Fixed Outriggers + Tether

Fixed outriggers act like training wheels on a bicycle.

Even people with quadriplegia can turn by leaning their body. The coach uses a tether to control speed, ensuring safety.

As the student improves, the coach can use a longer tether, creating the exciting feeling of skiing almost completely independently.
